Title of the presentation: “Citizenship Education During Class Hours” (introduction)
Brief description on the presentation/workshop :
I am proud to introduce a joint effort of ten expert teachers of the Debate Centre Lithuania, who developed the module “Citizenship Education during Class Hours”. It’s the first attempt of this kind in Lithuania. This module is part of the project “Citizenship Education in Formal and Non-formal Education System”, which was supported by the Ministry of Education and Science. The main goal of this module was to prepare all the materials and methodology so, that the class teachers could organize class hours without much additional preparation.
The presentations prepared by the teachers represent a great variety of topics as well as methodology. Our delegation also reflects the cultural, linguistic and geographic diversity. The teachers here are not only from big cities like Vilnius and Kaunas, but also from small towns and even a village. We have two presenters who are Russian, one Polish and seven Lithuanian.

Can you be/become a leader?

Brief description on the presentation/workshop (50- 100 words):

Presented material can be used by teachers as a guide to encourage students in making self assessments by set of methods. The typical leader features identified with the help of diagnostic game, creation of semantic map, provocative discussion about potentiality of each participant and creation of special conditions for organizing and planning of class life – all these can be used successfully to assess your real role in community. These methods help students to be actively involved into class community solutions that reflect their interests and needs.

Learning to collaborate with teachers
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
During the workshop a particular lesson plan will be provided. The lesson plan is designed for pupils aged between 13 and 15. The goal of the workshop is to demonstrate how class teachers can help their pupils to understand the teacher’s job so that pupils would be able to establish good collaborative relationships with the school teachers. The workshop is intended to be an interactive event during which workshop participants will be asked to imitate the lesson and will have the opportunity to discuss on the topic.

National stereotypes, Immigration/Emigration
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
Nowadays the issue under consideration is of vital importance worldwide. Lithuania, being a member-state of the European Union and of the world community, faces the problem in its full swing. Lithuanian citizens (especially young ones) are leaving the country in hundreds while people from Eastern Europe and Asia are coming in search of better living conditions and work. Students should be informed on the modern tendencies of the process and realize both its benefits and drawbacks. Moreover, tolerance to people of other origins and religious beliefs should become one of the main characteristics of a real citizen. In addition, it’s necessary to distinguish false and true values and be aware of schematic and exaggerated character of national stereotypes.

class activity “I respect”
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
An important task of an educator is to train tolerance by helping the child to understand who is the “other one”, what are the limits of tolerance and intolerance and how to develop communication skills. All these things can be included into constructive dialogue training during after class sessions. One can start from simple greeting, which daily involves the collision of different moods, characters, etiquette, variety of languages, and progress to more complicated form of dialogue, i.e. the conversation between conflicting majority and minority. The methods that are used include games, communication exercises. The experience of schoolchildren is stimulated by artistic means (fiction texts, animated cartoons), then the analysis of dialogues is transferred by analogy into real-life situations, searching for the possibilities of constructive dialogue.

“Think – Speak – Be responsible Member of Society”
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
Contemporary high school student as well as contemporary society lack the same values, one of which is responsibility – not only for onself but also for another person. Responsibility for fulfillment of the task, responsibility for the attitude or making a certain decision. Do we often ask ourselves : „What can I do to make a (positive) change happen?“ Do we often take the initiative, especially if the situation is not of direct concern to us? But in real life situations we don‘t know what situations we might confront and what assistance and understanding from others we might need. That is why I am inviting students to think, speak and analyze. To learn being citizens, to learn being responsible members of society.

“State and and its symbols.”” I’m interested in how Parliament works”.
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
I have been teacher of Polish language and literature for 17 years. I am working at Jan Pawel II Gymnazium in Vilnius. I am also a debate teacher/debate club leader at school.
I am one of the teachers who worked on the module „Civic Education during Class Hours“, which was initiated by the Debate Centre. I‘ve worked out two topics for the module: “State and and its symbols”and ” I’m interested in how Parliament works”.
The aims of these class hours are to foster in the students the sense national identity, sense of citizenry, the understanding that they are members of historically/culturally
/territorically established community. One of the main goals is also to bring up in students the ability to work together, to strengthen the skills of cooperation and to foster confidence in themselves. In these class hours I am suggesting modern methods of teaching, such as prioritizing the goals and measuring the steps, simulation of press conference, methodology of project experts.
The long-term goal is the upbringing of the generation of young citizens who are able to fully participate in the community life of a democratic country.

„Learn About Your Native Land“
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
Being a class educator I was preparing the material for class sessions under the title “ National upbringing during the class sessions”. I related national upbringing with the knowledge about the native land, its past, present and future.
The students were prepared to present their native land to guests. While being involved in the activities, the students were able to organize their working groups, to decide on the materials they were going to use, also, they decided on the presentation form. All the works were presented during the annual festival of the fellow-country-men.
There were eleven villages included in the presentation. The photographs exhibitions were organized, the students were telling stories about these villages. Besides, the newspaper with the material of the project was published as an outcome.
The beneficial side is that the students gained knowledge about their native land, took a fresh look at their everyday life, finding out that there are people and places young people can be proud of. The project teaches respect for the native land and the whole country.

“I and My Neighbors”.
Brief description on the presentation/workshop:
I am a history teacher and debate club leader from Lithuania. I have a ten year experience as class teacher, which I am trying to share working on the creation of the module “Citizenship Education During Class Hours”. I prepared a chapter called “I and My Neighbors”. Topics for 6 class hours are presented in this chapter. They are based on methodology of debate and the method of educational excursion. It is shown how it is possible to organize class hours outside school environment, providing the students with the opportunity to get acquainted with the cultural heritage of the place they live, on the one hand and to look for the connection/relationship with the school, on the other hand. During my presentation I will speak about the educational excursions with my class students, which were already organized based on the module “I and My Neighbors” and the ones that are still being planned to the neighboring countries. I do hope that this method adds to the upbringing of the young generation of responsible citizens who are living (or will be living) in a multicultural globalized world.

Role-playing as a Method of Debating
The purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate role-playing as a method of learning and debating and to introduce the topic of corporate responsibility/social entrepreneurship as a debate topic. The workshop will start with watching a short movie on the topic, and will be followed by a role-play (in small groups) inspired by it. The workshop is perfect for teachers, debate coaches, students and anyone else who would like to learn about this global education topic as well as a fun and engaging way to teach it. The workshop will last 1:15-1:30 hours.
