IDEA has created a format for online text debate and I was thinking that it might be fun to try those out here on these discussion boards. The format is relatively simple:
Before beginning a debate, teams would need to agree on a topic. To do so, they should post a message in the discussion forum Find Opponents, Agree on Topics. Post a message asking to debate, suggesting a topic, etc. (there are a host of suggested topics oin the online Debatabase). Once two teams have agreed to debate a topic, one of our moderators will create a new topic in the discussion forum Debates!, which you would use to post the "speeches". (NB: Only a moderator will be able to create a new disdcussion thread in the Debates! forum.)
The topic for debate can be mutually selected. One suggested topic to fit the novel format:
Debaters and judges who participated in online debates would be eligible to receive poins in DebateTracker and will receive recognition for their participation.
Of course, a typed debate is not going to permit the same resources for persuasion, and is not going to make use of all of the skills of a debater. However, the text format of the debate will allow debaters, judges, and observers to closely observe and analyze the CLASH in the debate.
Rather than relying on note-taking, advocates will have an exact text of their opponent's argument to answer. This means that responses can be specific and on point.
The fact that the debate can be posted in an open forum for all of us to see means that we can analyze and discuss a single debate that we have all witnessed.
The completed debate can be saved in computer format, arranged in speech sequence.
The internet gives us the ability to leap over borders inexpensively. We can debate each other without leaving home.
Here are a few rules and regulations for participating in online debates:
1. Of course, there is no 'time limit' on speeches, but each speech should be within the range of 250-1000 words. You will not be able to edit your "speech" once it is posted, so please consider and proofread carefully.
2. Each side will have 3 "speeches", taking turns responding to each other. Thus, debaters will not be allowed to post more than one "speech" consecutively. Please be courteous to your opponent and respond in a timely fashion, but be understanding of possible lags in your opponent's responses.
3. There will not be the option of a "question or cross-examination" post, so debaters are encouraged to include any requests for clarification for their opponent in their "speeches".
4. The judging period will be limited to 2 weeks following the debate starting from the time when the poll is posted. Judges are encouraged to add their comments and critiques of the debate in addition to their vote.
5. Please note that this is an open forum, but only the participating debaters will be allowed to post during the "debate round". Any unauthorized posts will be deleted.
6. And as always, be a courteous and tolerant debater as you would be in a normal debate round. Personal attacks on your opponent may disqualify you from the future debates.
