Debating a controversial issue within a formal public setting, in order to persuade an audience, who may participate in a post-debate discussion and question-answer period, or who may even vote on the debated issue. Typically, a timely central issue serves as the fulcrum for both the speakers and the audience, with speakers presenting opposing sides with the explicit intent of informing and persuading their immediate audience.
