What coaches are saying about this friendship tournament:
"Outstanding. The staff and setting was perfect. This was the most relaxed I've ever been at a tournament."
"My students keep on improving their debating skills when they participate in this tournament. And we are challenged to keep pace with other debaters in the world. Thank you for the chance afforded them by IDEA."
This fun high school friendship tournament will be hosted on the Campus of Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. This year, IDEA will gather debaters from around the globe for Worlds-style competition, as well as fun evening activities.
The “Worlds Schools” debate format consists of two teams (proposition and opposition) of three persons each. Each person delivers a speech of 8 minutes in length, and then one member of each team delivers a reply speech of 4 minutes. The opposition team delivers the first reply speech, which means that the proposition team delivers the first and last speech of the debate.
Find information on the Worlds format here.
Registration begins early 2010!
Application Procedure
Applications will be selected on the basis of debaters' overall experience in any format of debate along with their competitive success during the current school year. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. In other words, we will consider applications within two weeks of their receipt and will continue to accept teams until all of the spaces are filled. Applications will be accepted through April 22, 2010 or until all spots have been filled.
Pre-Tournament Workshop
IDEA and the Willamette University Debate Union will conduct a workshop the day before the tournament. All debaters entered in the tournament, as well as any other debaters who wish to register can participate in the debate workshop.
