IDEA Karl Popper Debate Championship
KPDC is a 3-day debate competition of national teams, which culminates in a Grand Final usually in a very prominent location with well-known keynote speaker. The main topic of this tournament is the Freedom of Expression.
Eligibility:
Duration: July 23rd – 27th
Mixed Team Track
The Mixed Team Track has been the core of the Youth Forum, since its beginning. It is a week-long mixture of debate instruction and competition using the Karl Popper Format. Emphasis is placed on inclusive atmosphere, which allows for true exchange among cultures and individuals of varied expertise in debate and speaking skills. The main topic of this track is the Energy.
Eligibility:
Duration: July 27th – August 5th
The Newcomers Track (TNT)
The purpose of this track is to introduce students new to Karl Popper debate to the format and rules of the game and provide them with a basic knowledge of debate and argumentation concepts. The TNT is designed for debaters that have not been debating for more than one year in any debate format and for no more than six months in Karl Popper debate.
Eligibility:
Duration: July 23th – August 5th
Note: This track will run parallel to the IDEA Karl Popper World Championships. Therefore, students attending the newcomers’ track will not compete in the first tournament, nor will they join in mixed teams during the second part of the Forum.
The Capacity Building Track (CBT)
Participants in this track will gain the skills and tools needed to strengthen their debate programs. This track will help experienced debaters transition into being coaches, judges, trainers or debate program developers.
Eligibility:
Debaters must also meet all eligibility requirements for the Youth Forum (see Standards).
Duration: July 27th – August 5th
British Parliamentary Track (BPT)
The purpose of this track is to help the senior high schools students with the transition from high school to university debating. Students will be instructed on the British Parliamentary Debate Format and will have the opportunity to try it out in a small tournament at the end.
Eligibility:
Duration: July 27th – August 5th
The YF will be accepting up to 200 participants (KPWC 50 teams). Every team is expected to bring a coach with them, who should be able to follow debate in English and would be able to judge at the tournament. We will be offering some swing coaches and judges for the teams who have trouble finding their own coaches/judges. Please contact us should you have a problem with bringing a coach/judge with you.
We are also introducing an institutional cap. The debate NGO or club may register up to 3 teams. For those institutions that are interested in registering more teams, we will create a waiting list. In case there are any more spaces free after the registration deadline, we will notify you.
Should you have more questions after reading this information, please contact the Youth Forum Coordinator.
