Curriculum
IDEA's 2008 Debate and Citizen Journalism Institute, co-sponsored by Bloomfield College, is offering five different course emphases and a variety of dynamic classes for high school, university, and post-graduate participants. This year, debate participants can choose from three different debate formats: World Schools Debate, British Parliamentary Debate, and Lincoln Douglas Debate. Classes are taught by skilled and experienced debate coaches and are designed to sharpen the skills of both novice and advanced debaters. The Institute is endorsed by the National Forensic League (NFL) in the U.S. Upon Institute enrollment, debate participants can choose from three different emphases or "majors" in addition to choosing their debate format: Beginning Debate, Advanced Debate, or Coaching Debate.
Participants who choose the Citizen Journalism major will get hands-on experience in creating media stories using a variety of different technologies, designing website content, and learning how to use their creations for advocacy. Citizen Journalism participants will be working with experienced journalists and media technology staff from Bloomfield College.
IDEA also offers a major for students wishing to improve their English communication skills. Instructors for our English as a Foreign Language major will use a mixture of teaching approaches, including teaching English through debate, to help students gain confidence communicating in both oral and written English.
