Interview with Scriberia's Dan Porter
Date Posted: 2011-08-20 05:14:04
When you listen to someone talking do you hear what they say - or understand what they mean? Debate and discussion is about more than words, and Scriberia’s Dan Porter has spent the past three years transforming the complicated stream of ideas that we verbalise into living animations that sprout from a single thought, branch off into unexpected directions - and open up a new way of thinking about issues that have many tangents. This summer he sat down and produced an animated edit of the debate IDEA hosted on the motion ‘The Jasmine Revolution Will Wither in North Africa’.

Working with Scriberia, and its team of fantastic graphical facilitators, we’ve clarified the complicated concepts to help you visualise the essence of the arguments.

2011 IDEA Exchange: WSDC Track Report
Date Posted: 2011-05-03 09:12:16
Over 50 high-school students from 5 nations (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus and Armenia) attended the World Schools Debating track at the 2011 IDEA Exchange. On Friday, the participants were introduced to the WSDC format in groups of 25, while their teachers (and several University debaters from around the region) took part in an intensive adjudication workshop. The student sessions were run by an energetic group of international trainers (who hailed from Slovakia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Scotland and Australia!) who focused on developing the debaters’ skills in Content, Style and Strategy.
On the Saturday and Sunday, students competed in teams of 3 in a WSDC style tournament. Motions debated included; This house supports quotas for women in parliament and This house would restrict the use of Facebook to those over the age of 18. After 4 spirited rounds teams from Lithuania and Estonia made it to the Grand Final, which was held in the atmospheric School Hall on the motion This house supports Turkey’s admission to the European Union. The debate was of an exceptionally high quality (especially as the teams only had 45 minutes to prepare!) and was narrowly won by Estonia on a 3-2 decision. All the participants should be congratulated on their hard work at the Exchange and I am confident that in the future many of them will go on to be star speakers in the WSDC debate format!

IDEA to comemmorate Martin Luther King Day!
Date Posted: 2009-01-19 11:32:23
"It is necessary that we all study and understand the words and deeds of Martin Luther King Jr. He was about fighting injustice. He was about non-violent civil disobedience. This is why such a figure as Dr. Martin Luther King belongs on the pages if the IDEA website. Speech and debate is about non-violent, civil disobedience. It is about expression of ideas and the desire to be heard and change the way people think -- all in the name of a freer, more democratic society.
The young people of today, more than ever need to find their voice and speak out for change and hope. Speech and debate offers a podium to find their voices. Dr. Martin Luther King acts as the perfect inspiration to step up to the podium, for he had preached for this hope of change and true democracy all his life."
