The International Debate Education Association in association with Willamette University is proud to announce the IDEA Summer Advocacy Program. This program for high school students includes: the National Mock Trial Program and National Parliamentary Debate Workshop. These two new exciting and intensive learning programs are designed for students of all experience and ability levels from novice to advanced students and are dedicated to making them better and more well rounded competitors in their respective activities. Students will be assigned to lab groups with others of like ability levels and will be trained by our top caliber teaching staff of national champion coaches, former competitors, and teachers.
The IDEA Summer Advocacy Program is directed by Dr. Robert Trapp. Professor Trapp is currently the Director of the nationally recognized forensic program at Willamette University. He also is a former president of the National Parliamentary Debate Association.
National Mock Trial Program
Students at the National Mock Trial Program will spend the first 7 days learning skills to help them become well rounded competitors. Students will have the opportunity to practice skills for roles they do not normally play, to see if they prefer that role, and to better understand how to relate to that character. Students who normally deliver the opening statement for their team will have an opportunity to learn and practice cross-examination skills and to sit in the witness chair. The National Mock Trial Program will focus especially on enhancing the skills and talents necessary for the roles students play, or are striving to play, on their team. The second 7-day segment will be dedicated to preparing for a trial which will be performed on the final full day of the program.
The staff of the National Mock Trial Program will be spearheaded by Dr. Felicia Walker, Chair of the Communication Department at Howard University and coach of their national champion mock trial team, and will include other highly qualified and experienced coaches and instructors. Paul Smith, Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oregon, will provide guest lectures for the program.
National Parliamentary Debate Workshop
Students at the National Parliamentary Debate Workshop will spend the first week developing and improving skills necessary for participation in parliamentary debate. The skills on which workshop participants will focus include research, case construction, refutation and rebuttals, parliamentary points, and delivery. The first week will also provide opportunities for students to participate in practice debates. The second 7-day portion of the workshop will be devoted to fine-tuning skills developed in the first week. The second part of the workshop also will include a debate tournament complete with elimination rounds.
We currently are negotiating to hire top ranked parliamentary debate coaches including former national champions and coaches of national champions. We also will have several prominent guest lectures including Brian Shipley, former National Parliamentary Debate Tournament semi-finalist and currently the Chief of Staff for the Democratic Party Leader of the Oregon Senate.
